In what has become one of the most unique Middle School summer experiences in Western New York, The I Can! Residential Program just completed it's 3rd year and it was definitely our best yet. I Can! was our primary focus in the month of July with one week of orientation and 3 weeks of programming for students from our 3 partner schools.
Here's a list of the programming that we provided our future College Scholars:
SEL skills workshops in leadership and goal setting
Recreation focused on team-building
College Etiquette workshop, where students learned the expected behaviors of college scholars
Q&A Session with UB student-athletes
Values workshop
Games and activities surrounding college knowledge terms
Art Department workshops
College classes taught by real professors — Computer Science 101, Intro to African American Studies, Intro to Criminal Law, Ecology, Psychology.
Campus tour/admissions presentation
Daily reflection time
Opportunity to write personal letters to school counselors
Family engagement presentation and dinner
Daily prize drawing
Meals at the UB Dining Hall
Our entire team was invested in making this the best possible experience for students and it was a resounding success. In total, we were able to serve 40 grade 6 thru 8 students from our partner schools with many believing they can go to college!
